Portrait Value Study

Borrowed a portrait book from the ccs library, Painting the Head in Oil by John Howard Sanden. His explanations are pretty clear and they make sense. And his paintings are super juicy and economical. c.1976

I've been doing my fair share of this lately, maybe I'll try this out after I'm done worrying about this essay.

Undoing the Worrying Habit

Once acquired, the habit of worrying seems hard to stop. We're raised to worry and aren't considered "grown up" until we perfect the art. Teenagers are told: "you'd better start worrying about your future". If your worries aren't at least as frequent as your bowel movements, you're seen as irresponsible, childish, aimless. That's a "responsible adult" game rule.

To the extent that worrying is learned/conditioned behaviour, it can be undone. There are psychological gimmicks for undoing the worry habit. There are also obstacles.

Obstacle 1: Happiness Negation

Changed the lighting (again :/) to behind the viewer. I added an awning to the foreground with the happy sideffect of stripey reflections on the car. Now all I have to do is fix up those people and noodle this to death and I'll be done!

I think I've found my new favorite tool for front/rear views. It's called Alchemy and its magical.

First digital

Sooo I thought this was cute. These are my very first digital sketches (sophomore year highschool so...4 years ago), done on my then girlfriend's wacom graphire. And they're just as bad as my very first drawings ever, which I'm sure my mom has saved in a file somewhere in one of the piles back home. I remember drawing people as giant wobbly heads, with arm/hands sticking out of the ears and leg/feet sticking out of the jaw, and big wobbly glasses. (my parents usually, they're both blind) They looked so horrible, but I just didn't give a shit because I was a kid. Those were the days...

This weekend was especially unproductive, we stayed up till 7am up watching the Malaysian F1 race get rained out, went downtown to the riverfront, went to the top of the GM Renaissance center in it's freakishly quiet and fast elevator and saw Canada and Detroit at airplane height. Fergie, Gym class heroes (crappier version of sublime), Stained and SLASH from Guns n Roses were playing.

Please note none of these are class related. Specially not the weird teeth thing.

Offenbach am Main?

I was looking at visitors to the blog from google analytics, most are from places that I know nothing about. Who's in Offenbach am Main in Germany? Is there a school there? There seems to be a lone regular reader in Budapest Hungary. I got 1 visit from the whole of Africa this month. Woo! There's a cluster from Sao Paulo Brazil and Mexico City, some from San fran (AAU people?) and Pasadena (Art center), Paris (Strate), London (RCA?), Miami (DASH), Moscow(MAMI), a few from Pforzhiem (Pforzhiem). I guess my blog does better in the car nerd academic circles. Theres also the few loyal readers from random places around the world. Anyways, thanks for reading! Sorry I don't know any more languages.

So my teacher was like fuck that other night scene thumbnail, so I had to start back from the original sunset lighting thumbnail. Pain In My Ass. Not done yet either :/

Laz and I

So Laz took my little spaceship (top left) and "remixed it" he also drew up this fine desert policeman to pilot it. So then I got to tweak his character a bit. I shrunk the head a bit, tweaked the helmet and gave him broader shoulders for a bit of a more intimidating look. Gave him a Jay Leno esque chin as well. And axed the mideivalish boots for a more contemporary style.
